Tuesday Aug. 2 Grindelwald mountainside walk

It's another clear day, so we take the cable car up the mountain to Mannlichen and linger at the top for the view.  A helicopter's fetching materials and water for a construction crew, dodging the walkers on the road/trail that intersects with the work crew.

The topmost perch is teeming with people like us, enjoying the view that's the reward for a simple walk from the cable car terminus.

Jim's got a geo cache's coordinates on his GPS, and in spite of the people (muggles) all around, he steps off the path and down what seems like a cliff to reach the geo cache.  What the heck, I follow him.  Great view.  I wrap an arm around the end of the snow fence for security and snap a photo.  Our walk from yesterday is in the background, down in the valley.  I refuse to think about the cliff that drops off at that other snow fence.

We are limiting our walking today in order to trick my sore big toe into thinking it has the day off, so we take the cable car down the opposite side into the Grindelwald valley.

From there, we take a bus to another lift station to ride another cable car up to First.  It's a ski lift destination in the winter.

Today, it's the start of our 4 mile easy--mostly level--walk with views of the Eiger mountain from a new angle, and skads of other huge mountains that we haven't seen till now.

We're pushing it time-wise this afternoon, but do manage to squeeze onto the 3rd of three buses picking up folks from our walk terminus, Grosse Scheidegg.

The bus drops us at the train station in Grindelwald, a busy little town.

From there the train takes us to Kleine Scheidegg, where we catch the LAST train tonight down the mountain.  We've been here before.

Whew.  Made it back home in time for late dinner.
Imagine the chicken main course, with potato wedges and sauteed sweet yellow and red peppers.
